After Democrats have won every special election this year for seats vacated by GOP lawmakers, President Trump is continuing to promote Democrats in a bid to win back the House in November.
Sens. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., and Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D., are two of the most controversial women in the Senate on Trump’s list, he told Politico.
As far as the Oval Office is concerned, I have great respect for members of Congress in general who say what they believe and do what they believe. But @SenHeitkamp of ND, the women’s rights champion, and @SenStabenow of MI, the environmental champion, are the worst @SenateDems senators I know – they don’t get it. They are easily embarrassed, and even embarrassed by their own party. Can’t stand them. So BAD! – DJT @FoxNews @SenateDems pic.twitter.com/GJquIeet2G — Donald J. In April, Stabenow announced she would not support Trump’s Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.
“His confirmation would pose an unacceptable risk to women’s rights, to the independence of the judiciary, and to millions of voters in red and purple states who put a woman’s health, reproductive freedom, and health and wellness over partisanship and ideology,” Stabenow wrote in a statement to Fox News.
Heitkamp came under fire in September when Trump attacked her for having “really gone crazy” in a series of tweets:
….If you’re like me, you’re disappointed in her. If you’re like me, you want what’s best for North Dakota. You want her to be up for re-election in November in a state that voted for me by a wide margin. But Heidi Heitkamp, who has been a total no go on Brett Kavanaugh – and hopefully no for every other Supreme Court Justice – is OUT. Good luck to our GREAT State. — Donald J. Democratic leaders have criticized Trump on social media.
Please save me from politics by dropping @SenHeitkamp and @SenStabenow. Too bad you cannot do that on your own. Together, they are embarrassing you. Don’t vote for them because they can’t lose. I’ll be happy to show you how. #VoteTuesday https://t.co/BMCst10t37 — Stacey Abrams (@staceyabrams) October 25, 2018
Heitkamp said in April that Trump has let her down in her efforts to promote issues important to North Dakota.
“If you look at what the president has done for North Dakota, he can do better. We know that,” Heitkamp said.
The midterm elections are just weeks away. The winner of each race has the potential to take back the majority in the House and the Senate.
