Democrats move to tax climate-changing carbon emissions under Green New Deal

Democrats in the House and Senate are considering including in the party’s upcoming spending package a carbon tax similar to the one President Barack Obama included in his budget proposal.

The deal includes an amendment to amend the budget resolution to raise $40bn by 2020 for a Green New Deal that includes carbon taxes, a demand made by Senator Ed Markey and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the influential two young Democrats who are credited with drawing attention to climate change and calling for mandatory renewable energy goals. The provision also includes a mandate to increase the federal minimum wage to $15 per hour by 2025.

Since signing the budget deal in February, Republicans have blocked additional environmental measures introduced by Democrats. In September, they successfully blocked a Green New Deal version of the Reclamation Act, a federal water infrastructure bill, after water transportation industry leaders and their Republican allies, led by senator John Barrasso of Wyoming, successfully pushed to try to strip out the carbon tax provision.
